Design tips for incorporating a freestanding bath
A quality freestanding bath is more than just a bathroom feature. It’s a piece of art that can elevate any bathroom space from average to exceptional. But unfortunately, these baths tend to take up a lot of space and can be hard to fit into your bathroom. Check out our tips for incorporating a freestanding bath into your bathroom.
Choose the right space
Choosing a suitable space is the most important step toward incorporating a freestanding bath into your space.
First, you’ll need to get the measurements of your bath to make sure it fits.
Next, think about how a freestanding bath will look in your space. If your bathroom is a large area you could have a bath with three sides exposed with the short end up near a wall. If your area is smaller you may want to put one side of your bath up against a wall to save space.
Wherever you put the bath, make sure there’s plenty of clearance around it for people to get around the bathroom (unless it’s up against a wall) and make sure there’s room for people to get in too. You should also make sure your bath won’t block any doors or windows
Complement with freestanding taps and mixers
The ultimate complement to any freestanding bath is a freestanding tap and mixer. These are installed directly into the floor and are often elegantly curved, to suit the bath’s design.
If your space allows we recommend a tap like the Gareth Ashton, Lucia bath filler – which has a simple, yet beautiful design.
If you don’t have space for a freestanding tap, wall-mounted taps can look great too. The Gareth Ashton Vela wall set is the perfect example.
Think about lighting & natural light
In most bathrooms the freestanding tub is a main feature. So think about how you can make your tub feel truly special with light – both natural and artificial. Dimmed lighting can be a great way to create a mood while you’re in the tub. Perhaps a skylight so that sun can stream in if your bathroom is particularly dark.
Get advice from the experts
Before you start planning your bathroom with a freestanding tub, it’s a great idea to speak to a plumber to see what’s possible. If you need a new tap, or to move the location of a current tap, you may need to install new pipes, move or extend existing pipes. You’ll also need waterproofing underneath the bath, and to make sure the floor is strong enough to support its weight. Speak to a plumber to get an idea of what the costs may be, and to ensure installing a freestanding bath in your space is possible.
Last, but not least, you’ll need to find a supplier for your freestanding tub. Go with a quality Australian brand with a rock solid reputation like Abey Australia, so that you know you’re buying something made with care and the best materials.
