How to design the ultimate Australian outdoor kitchen

There’s nothing quite like an Australian summer. And there’s nothing more Australian than cooking, dining, and having a couple of drinks outdoors on a warm evening.

To take your al fresco adventures to the next level you’ll need a fully equipped outdoor kitchen – here’s our guide to creating one.

Get council approval

In some cases if you’re installing an outdoor kitchen you’ll need council approval, particularly if you’re installing gas appliances. To avoid costly mishaps check your council’s rules before you start, or speak to a builder with good knowledge of local rules and regulations.

Use the the right materials

Rule one when installing an outdoor kitchen is that you need to use materials that can last in harsh Australian conditions. Here’s a list of durable materials to get you started:

  • High-grade compact laminate for cabinetry, or benchtops.
  • Treated timber.
  • Outdoor stone, concrete or stainless steel.
  • Stainless steel fittings and fixtures grade 316 (these are known for their excellent corrosion resistance).

There are many other materials you can use – but before you choose anything make sure you ask the seller or do some research to ensure it’s suited for outdoor areas.

Consider your layout

Just like your regular kitchen, you’ll need to consider how your kitchen is laid out to make it easier to use. Locate your outdoor fridge, sink and cooktop close by so that you can wash, cook and gather ingredients quickly. Think about how your indoors flows into your outdoor kitchen – and consider how your outdoor kitchen will relate to your outdoor lounge.

Often it’s a good idea to lay out your outdoor kitchen, dining and lounge similar to your interior space, with a kitchen against a back wall, and your dining as the centerpiece.

Prioritise shade

If you don’t get the right shade for your outdoor area it’ll be near unusable for several months of the year. There are several options to consider, including:

  • Built-in verandahs that connect to your house.
  • Moveable shades and umbrellas.
  • Built-in cloth sunshades.
  • Pergolas with adjustable louvres.

Whatever you choose, make sure it’s durable enough to withstand wind, and has UV protection so it keeps the sun off and won’t degrade in summer. Consider where the shade will be at key times of the day when you’ll be using your outdoor kitchen and lounge, and make sure your outdoor kitchen is always shaded so it lasts longer.

Integrate your barbeque

If you’re going for a premium design, think about buying a barbeque that can be integrated into your cabinetry and benchtop. This creates a seamless look, giving your outdoor space the same high-quality finish as your indoor kitchen.
