The ultimate bathroom design guide for families with young kids

Having little ones in the house is often chaotic, but adapting your home to them can make life easier. To help you do that we’ve put together the ultimate bathroom design guide for families with young kids.

Non-slip surfaces

Safety should be priority number one when renovating a bathroom in a house with young kids. That’s why we recommend always using non-slip surfaces, including grippy vinyls, textured tiles, or other materials specifically designed to offer better grip. Making this one small change can eliminate the vast majority of potential accidents.

Curved edges

Unwritten rule – if there’s a hard table, vanity, bath, or sink edge in your home, a toddler will find it and bang their head on it. The simple solution to this is to go for softer, curved edges wherever possible (which has the added benefit of looking amazing in a tasteful bathroom reno).

Dual sinks and vanities that are easy to clean

If you’ve got a growing family it helps to look to the future when renovating, then design your bathroom accordingly. Dual sinks and vanities are a great idea, to stop traffic jams and arguments in the morning when pre-teens start needing their mirror time. Bonus points if the vanities and sinks (and in fact, everything in the space) is simple and easy to clean with a quick wipe.

The bigger the tub, the better

Fact – kids love baths. And bigger tubs = more fun. So it’s worth looking at whether or not you can fit a large tub in during your renovation as there’s a good chance you’ll end up in there with one or two manic toddlers at some point in your life (at which point, you’ll be thankful you went for the larger option).

Our favourite for families is the Formoso 1690 mm Natural Stone, but any large freestanding bath will do the job.

Adjustable showerheads

As a parent there’s a good chance you’ll need to clean up your fair share of messes. This might be a toddler caked in mud, a baby covered head to toe in porridge, or (worst case) a poo explosion. In that event, you’ll be extremely thankful that you installed an adjustable showerhead, like this Gareth Ashton arch rain and hand shower, which makes cleaning up easier than ever.

Ample storage (with the right mix of accessibility and safety)

Kids come with a mountain of stuff, which tends to overflow into mess if there’s nowhere to put it. That’s why storage is one of the most important things to include in any bathroom reno when there are little ones about.

Not just any storage though – it’s a good idea to have a lockable cabinet that’s up high for chemicals and cleaners, then storage for harmless stuff like towels elsewhere.

Soft close drawers

Anything that reduces noise and broken stuff is a good idea for parents. And when your kids are young and haven’t learnt not to slam doors, soft close can be a godsend.
