How to update your kitchen tap in 4 steps
You’ve been putting it off for a while… but you’ve finally decided it’s time to update your kitchen sink tap. A lot of people are in the same boat – hating their old tap but under the impression that it will be a big undertaking to install a new one.
Well, good news – it isn’t! Installing a new kitchen tap is easy and affordable with the help of a qualified plumber. The hardest part? Figuring out which style suits your space!
Once you have your new faucet sorted, check out our guide below to get an idea of how your plumber will install it.
Step 1: Gather your supplies
Here’s what your plumber will need to get started:
- Basin wrench
- Adjustable pliers
- Putty knife
- Cleaning cloth/towel
- Silicone caulk
- Teflon tape
- Screwdriver
- Your new kitchen tap
Step 2: Prep your space
You’ll want to make sure your workspace is ready for your installation. So before you do anything, clear everything out from under the sink and turn off the water at the valves. You can shut the water off underneath the cabinet. Just turn the hot and cold valves clockwise with your wrench.
Step 3: Remove your old unit
Now you’re ready to remove your old kitchen faucet. To do this, head under the sink and use your wrench to disconnect the supply lines from the valves. You’ll then need to unscrew the mounting nuts.
With those removed, use your screwdriver to lift the faucet and any mounting hardware from the top. You’ll notice a bit of gunk has built up under the faucet – use your putty knife to scrape out the hard bits and your towel to wipe away the rest.
Pro tip: If you’re struggling to remove the nuts, use penetrating oil to loosen things up.
Step 4: Install your new kitchen tap
Now do step three in reverse! Your new kitchen tap will come with all of the hardware needed to install it, so make sure you have it all handy. First, attach the hoses to your tap if they aren’t already. Then pop your silicone caulk onto the bottom of the new hardware and insert the hoses into the sink holes. Press firmly down on the hardware to allow the caulk to set.
Pro tip: Wipe away any silicone caulk that has squeezed through the opening with a wet towel.
Next, it’s time to reconnect the supply lines. Head under the sink and screw your mounting hardware onto each tailpiece and reattach the valves. Wrap the Teflon tape around the threads of the valves counterclockwise, and screw on the nuts with your wrench. Turn on the hot and cold valves and test your faucet.
Everything running? Great! Now double check there are no leaks – if you find one, tighten the connections until it stops.
Pro tip: Let the kitchen tap run for a while to flush out the new lines.
