Wall-mounted vs Counter-mounted mixers: What’s better?
When renovating or updating a bathroom, the little details are what makes all the difference. One small detail that can have a big impact is your choice of basin mixer – wall-mounted or countertop. To help you make an informed decision, we’re looking at the pros and cons of each option in detail.
Wall-mounted mixers
Space saving
One of the biggest benefits of wall-mounting your mixer and spout is an obvious one – it leaves a little extra room on your countertop. It also makes the space cleaner and easier to use, since it’s a fully clear bench. In busy households with one or two bathrooms, this extra real estate can be extremely valuable.
Appealing design
Wall-mounted taps look amazing when done right. Your countertop is going to look clean and minimalist, while the spout coming out of the wall always gives a premium feel.
Easier to clean
Let’s say you clean your bathroom countertops twice a week. If you have the same top for ten years you’ll wipe it down 1,040 times before replacing it.
Having your mixer and tap wall-mounted will make those cleans much easier, saving you a little time and hassle. Your bathroom countertop may also stay cleaner for longer since there’s no join between the mixer and top where grime can gather and get stuck.
Ability to use above counter basins
Above counter sinks can elevate your vanities design, by adding an appealing sculptural element. In most cases these are best paired with wall-mounted mixers and spouts, rather than counter mounts.
Complex installation
Wall-mounted taps and mixers are usually installed into tiles, and require extra plumbing work, which can make installation more time consuming. There’s a higher risk of error, so if you go down this route make sure you choose a plumber and/or tiler who knows what they’re doing.
Higher cost
There are a few more parts required and installation may take longer, so there may be an extra cost associated with choosing a wall-mounted mixer.
Counter-mounted mixers
Ease of installation
Counter-mounted mixers and taps are very easy and fast to install. If you’re DIYing, this is definitely the way to go.
More options to choose from
There may be more options to choose from, with more diverse pricing if you go for a counter-mounted mixer and spout. For example, Abey has a range of 18 options to choose from.
Cost effective
Simpler, easier installation, less parts required, cheaper mixers available – this all means that generally a counter-mounted mixer is the best low-cost option.
Harder to clean
Counter-mounted mixers can make your bathroom counters a little more difficult to clean. That’s simply because you’ll need to wipe around the mixer, and grime and mould have a bad habit of sticking to the mixer’s base no matter what you do. Clean regularly and this shouldn’t be a problem.
Reduces counter space
The mixer itself will only take up a couple of inches on your countertop, but it does have an impact. You may find that it makes the space behind your sink far less useful and if your bathroom counters are small, this can be annoying.

Wall-mounted mixers look amazing, they’re easier to clean, and they save space, but they can be more expensive to install. Counter-mounted mixers are the cheaper, easier option, and they can look great too.
