Bathroom trends to avoid in 2022

A few good decisions can make a good bathroom renovation, but one bad decision could unravel your entire design. That’s why it’s just as important to avoid old, outdated and misguided design trends and features as it is to make good ones.

Considering this, to help you make the right choices we’ve put together a quick list of five bathroom trends to avoid in 2022.

All-white-everything

White is the most versatile bathroom shade, which is why it’s so popular. But with that said, it’s easy to overdo it and end up with a washed out space without character.

When using white tiles, vanities and sinks be sure to break it up with pops and shades of colour in your fittings, fixtures, paint and other design features. For example, mixers in the Inciso Wall mounted range in brushed brass are perfect for adding a little warmth to a white bathroom.

Also consider the bathroom’s lighting when choosing colours. White can make dark, small spaces appear bigger but colours can look great in large and well lit bathrooms.

Patterned tile flooring

Bold patterned and geometric tiles can look great but they should always be used with restraint and care (or not at all to be safe). If you do choose to use a patterned tile, make sure that the rest of your bathroom’s tiling, fixtures, fittings and design features are minimalist, with neutral or complimentary colours.

And if you’re not sure? Skip the tiles and go for a more neutral timeless design feature!

Business and clutter

Maximalist design with big bold colours, house plants and accessories came back in 2020  and 2021 but it’s best avoided in 2022 and beyond. Instead of packing your bathroom with stuff choose fewer, higher quality accessories and more understated fixtures and fittings for a more refined, luxurious look.

Fully painted walls

If you have a limited budget painted walls may be the only option – and it can look great if you make the right choices. However, there’s no denying that tiles add more character and design appeal when they’re well executed.

If you can’t afford wall-to-wall tiles in your next renovation, instead go for a partially tiled room, including floors, splashbacks and half-wall tiling. That way you can get the tiled look with less expense.

Built-in baths

It costs extra to build baths into your tiling, takes longer and we’d argue it usually looks much worse. Doing so can take up bathroom space unnecessarily and make your bath look chunky and boxy.

Instead of spending the extra cash, why not choose a simpler, more elegant freestanding bath? Abey Australia stocks over a dozen options, including our personal favourite – the timeless and elegant Barwon Clearstone gloss tear drop bath.

One of the best ways to avoid old, tired trends is to shop for fixtures, fittings and inspiration at a premium bathroom design store like Abey Australia. Need some on trend ideas for your bathroom reno? Come and browse our full range at your nearest Abey selection gallery or check out Abey online.
