A quick guide to cleaning and maintaining your bathroom basin

Clean bathroom basin and mirror

The humble bathroom sink is used every day, often left a little wet and exists in a humid environment. Unfortunately, this means that they can be a breeding ground for bacteria if they’re not properly cleaned.

But luckily for you most modern bathroom sinks (including Abey’s entire online collection) feature an easy cleaning design. To save you time and make your housework easier, we’ve put together a quick guide to cleaning your bathroom basin.

Pick a cleaning product (or make your own)

A better cleaning product will mean a more effective, easier clean so take a little time to make sure you’ve got the right stuff for the job. Look for a disinfectant bathroom cleaner and make sure to check whether it’s suitable for your sink’s material.

If you’d rather use something more natural, go for one cup of water mixed with a cup of vinegar. Or if you’ve got a stainless steel sink go for a stainless steel polish to make sure you get it sparkling.

Daily quick clean

To keep it clean and hygienic you should clean your sink every day – but don’t worry it should only take 30 seconds. Simply keep a bottle of spray and wipe under your sink so that it’s always on hand.

Spray your tapware, sink and countertop with cleaner then wipe with a damp cleaning cloth. Polish the tapware with a dry cloth if you’ve got time.

Monthly deep clean

Remove plugs and drain covers if possible and soak them for a few minutes in a vinegar solution to remove mould and grime build up. Do your usual daily clean to get your sink looking clean, then move on to the little details.

Spray cleaning solution seals around taps, tiles, cabinets and other fittings then leave to sit according to the instructions on the bottle. Next, scrub the seals with a stiff bristled cleaning brush to remove the build up of mould and grime.

If you have any stubborn black spots on seals there’s another option: rub a paste of white vinegar (1 cup) and baking soda (3 tablespoons) onto them, leave them for 5-10 minutes then scrub with a stiff bristled cleaning brush before rinsing with a damp sponge or cloth.

If the stains aren’t gone yet repeat 4-6 times until they are. For an even more effective option use 1 part bleach 4 parts water, to spray on seals then leave to evaporate before wiping with a wet cloth.

Choose easy cleaning basins

Cleaning an old, poorly designed basin and cabinet can be a real pain. If yours is getting harder to clean it might be time to update it to something newer that’s designed for easy maintenance.
