Going for gold: How to choose a luxury kitchen sink for your home

Luxury black kitchen sink

If the kitchen is the heart of the home, the sink is the heart of the kitchen. Whether you’re washing veggies, cleaning up or cooking, the sink is an essential tool – and if chosen well it can elevate your entire kitchen’s design.

With that said, selecting a kitchen sink can be tricky. There are thousands of options to choose from, including countless different shapes, sizes, materials and finishes. To make your decision easier check out our quick and easy guide to choosing a luxury kitchen sink for your home.

Consider your kitchen’s theme

Your sink should fit seamlessly into your kitchen and elevate your design so before you start browsing, take a moment to consider your kitchen’s theme.

Is it modern and minimalist with muted colours? If so, the Schock Greenwich in stone might be perfect.
Or is it elegant and timeless? Then something from the Chambord range of glazed, white luxury kitchen sinks might be better.

Pick the right size

As a general rule, larger kitchens suit larger sinks and vice versa. What’s more, if you’re feeding a big family or cooking frequently a large sink might be more practical (they’re great for hiding dishes in after all!).
For small kitchens the Schock Nemo Single Bowl is a great option, while larger kitchens may be suited to a double bowl set up.

Think about materials

There are countless luxury kitchen sink materials to consider, from outdoor and coloured stainless steel, to fireclay and granite.

Consider your kitchen’s theme before you choose and keep the following rules of thumb in mind. Fireclay sinks are better for classic, elegant looks. Stainless steels are better suited to modern, utilitarian spaces while granite sinks are perfect for minimalist designs.

Choose undermount or top mount

The way your sink is mounted will have a big impact on your kitchen’s overall design and function so it’s worth taking the time to think it over. Generally, you’ve got two options – top or undermount sinks.

Top mount sinks are dropped into a hole in your bench and the sink’s lip or rim sits above the bench. Undermount sinks are attached to the underside of your bench, allowing for a more streamlined look where there is no visible sink lip.

Undermount sinks can be more expensive to install and take up a little extra space under the bench, but they’re also easier to clean and can be more attractive.

Go for single or double bowl

Last, but not least you’ll need to consider whether your luxury kitchen sink needs one or two basins. A single bowl sink usually has one large basin with no dividers – while double bowl sinks have two sinks, with one narrow divider in between.

Single bowl sinks are typically better in small kitchens, and since the single bowl is often bigger they may be better for washing larger dishes. Double bowl sinks, on the other hand, are more convenient in some ways. They allow you to store dirty dishes in one sink, while you use the other for food prep and often come with integrated cutting boards so you can turn the second sink into prep space.
