How to maintain and clean your kitchen fittings

Once you’ve got your dream kitchen you’ll want to keep it looking beautiful. So it’s worth taking a little time to make sure you’re cleaning and maintaining it properly – from your mixers to your oven hob. 

To give you a headstart we’ve put together a quick and easy guide to maintaining and cleaning your kitchen fittings.

Kitchen sinks

Whether your kitchen sink is made of fireclay or stainless steel it’s always best to use warm water and gentle detergents to clean rather than harsh chemicals. Run the tap to get rid of all the debris first – then a cleaning solution of one part vinegar and one part water, or a gentle spray and wipe will do the trick.

Stainless steel and some other materials can be prone to scratching so avoid hard scourers like metal wool and go for a soft microfibre cloth when cleaning. 

If you’ve got stubborn grime and staining that you’re struggling to remove, try baking soda. Cover the entire sink, let it sit for five minutes then give it a good scrub with a soft cloth and a dab of gentle dish detergent, using a circular motion and working down toward the drain. If your drain ever starts to smell damp pour down a half cup of baking soda followed by a half cup of vinegar and let it sit for five minutes then follow it with hot water. This should sanitise your drain.

Kitchen tap and mixers

Grime and hard water can build up in the mechanisms of kitchen taps and mixers. So to keep yours clean simply give them a regular wipe with a microfibre cloth and either warm water, a gentle kitchen spray or a vinegar water solution. 

If the bits in the mechanism get grimy over time you can also use a toothbrush with some vinegar solution to scrub them clean.

Oven hobs

To clean a stainless steel oven hob with cast iron pan supports first remove the supports. Then you can clean the stainless steel hob with a microfibre cloth, warm water and vinegar or water and dish soap (just make sure you check the manufacturer’s instructions to make sure the soap is OK to use).

If you’ve got stains around your hobs you can apply a product like Bar Keepers Friend or a paste made out of one part baking soda, one part water and leave it for a few minutes before scrubbing with a toothbrush or wiping with a microfiber cloth and cleaning the hob again with water.

If you need to clean the cast iron pan supports, first make sure they’re cool. Then use warm water, vinegar and a non-abrasive scrubbing brush to get rid of debris, grime and discoloration. Make sure you dry them completely once you’re done and do not soak your cast iron pan supports.
