Your guide to mixing and matching kitchen fittings

Any kitchen renovation project comprises dozens of separate parts. There’s your cabinetry, your cabinet hardware, taps, basins, lighting, benchtop, mixers and more.

The key is ensuring all these fittings, fixtures, colours and designs come together to form a cohesive, functional and attractive whole. To help you get inspired we’ve come up with a guide to matching kitchen fittings to your design.

Pick a theme

Your renovation or refresh should always start with a theme or an idea. Something to guide your choices of colours, cabinetry, fixtures and fittings.

For example, farmhouse is a common kitchen theme that features luxurious fixtures like this Chambord Fireclay sink, heritage taps and mixers, clean whites and rustic touches like granite benchtops. Modern minimalism on the other hand features simple but elegant fixtures like this Gessi Flessa mixer, paired with muted colours and thinner benchtops.

Take a look online, browse pinterest and find kitchens that inspire you if you’re struggling to find a theme.

Mix up materials

Your kitchen fittings, materials and colours should complement each other, not necessarily match. For that reason, there’s nothing wrong with choosing different metals for your sink, tap, mixer, draw handles and other fittings – as long as they look good against each other.

For example, a Fireclay sink could look great with a brushed brass Provincial kitchen mixer, set against white cabinets with brass handles. The key to making sure your kitchen design gels is seeing all the materials next to each other before you make a decision. Consider putting together a kitchen renovation mood board so you can easily visualise everything together.

Choose complementary colours

The colours on your kitchen’s walls, cabinets, and even benchtop should be selected to suit your fixtures and fittings. If you’re going with bright, copper fittings you may want to tone down wall and cabinetry colours to avoid clashes – similarly if you’re curating a modern minimalist look, muted neutral colours may be your best option.

With all that said, you shouldn’t be afraid to use brighter, more impactful colours. Like we mentioned in the above point, just make sure you view your fittings against all the colours together to ensure they complement each other.

Choose statement pieces

Don’t be afraid to be bold with your kitchen fixtures and fittings. Experiment with different colours, materials and styles when choosing and if it fits with your theme, go for a statement piece.

One of our favourites is the Abey Boutique Lugano single bowl sink in Eureka Gold. This bold and beautiful sink comes in a bright gold, artisan copper and a deep black. All of these colours can really elevate a kitchen design if they’re well matched and suited to the rest of the decor.
