How to choose the perfect sink for your kitchen

As anyone who’s experienced it will know, having the wrong kitchen sink for your space can cause a host of problems. From making simple tasks difficult, to compromising your entire kitchen’s design.

So, how do you avoid ending up in this situation? You’re off to a good start – research is key to narrowing down your options and landing on the perfect product. With that in mind we’re breaking down the most important considerations when choosing a kitchen sink.

The most important factors when choosing a kitchen sink

1. Size

Choosing the right size kitchen sink is absolutely essential. Too small, and you’ll be juggling larger pans as you try to wash them, too large and you might find the sink has eaten into your countertops, making your space less functional.

To get started take some measurements of the surface space you have available, and decide how much of this you want to dedicate to the sink itself. This is much better than going into the process with only a vague idea of ‘standard’ vs. ‘large’ kitchen sinks, and will help ensure you know what you’re looking for.
If you’re swaying more towards a larger unit, you might consider going for a double-bowl kitchen sink. Not only are such units very much in style at the moment, they’re also highly practical, allowing you to perform multiple tasks at once.

2. Mount Style

You have three basic options when it comes to choosing a mount style for your kitchen sink:

  1. Flushmount sinks: these provide a seamless joint between the sink itself and the unit it sits within. In our experience, these sinks work best with stone countertops.
  2. Undermount sinks: you might want to go with an undermount sink if you’re particularly conscious about the amount of counter space you have. These sinks are installed under a kitchen bench.
  3. Inset kitchen sinks: these sinks are inserted into the countertop, so that the rim of the sink can be seen. Inset sinks are really versatile, and can be used with a wide range of countertop materials, including laminate.

3. Materials and Finishes

Your choice of material will impact not only your sink’s aesthetic effect on your overall kitchen, but different materials come with different benefits. Here are some of the most popular kitchen sink materials:

  • Granite: if you’re after a granite kitchen sink go for the the Schock range. Schock pioneered quartz composite kitchen sinks and have earned a reputation for quality. As well as being almost indestructible, these modern, colourful sinks will add serious style to your kitchen.
  • Stainless steel: there are so many benefits to a stainless steel kitchen sink. Not only are they incredibly easy to clean, stainless steel is a very eco-friendly choice given how easy it is to recycle.
  • Ceramics: if you’re looking for a touch of timelessness, ceramic kitchen sinks may be the perfect option for you. As well as their aesthetic charm, ceramic sinks from French manufacturer Chambord are totally heatproof and easy to clean.

In addition to materials, you also want to think about finishes. At Abey Australia, many of our kitchen sink products come with a huge variety of options when it comes to finishes, meaning you can customise your product to fit with your overall design vision.
